Common Heat Pump Problems and What They Meant

Why Is My Heat Pump Not Heating?
When your heat pump isn't heating, the most common issue is is often low refrigerant. Even in winter, your heat pump relies on refrigerant to transfer heat from the outside into your home. So if your heat pump isn't heating or only producing cold or lukewarm temperatures, call a NATE-Certified heating and cooling company near you to recharge your refrigerent.

BOB BOLDT'S EXPERT ADVICE | Before you call your HVAC company, have your refridgerant type ready. You can find this on your outdoor condenser unit (commonly called your AC unit) for a manufacturer's plate or sticker. Your refridgerant type should be listed as R-22, R-410A, R-454B or similar.
Why Won't My Heat Pump Turn On?
If your heat pump won't turn on, it is most likely an electrical or control issue. Check for a tripped breaker, make sure your thermostat is turned on or run outside and check for a ice blockages around your outdoor unit. If it's not one of those three things, than it might be a more technical issue since a broken capacitor, dirty coils or a flipped safety switch. All things that require a trained and certified technician to diagnose and treat.
Can A Heat Pump Replace A Furnace?
Yes, a heat pump can replace a traditional furnace. As it is an electrical system that cycles hot and cold air throughout your home it can be an energy efficient replacement to traditional gas furnaces. We always recommend for mid-to-large size homes to integrate traditional furnaces with a heat pump to withstand our Minnesotan winters.
Can A Heat Pump Cool A House?
Yes! Contrary to the name, a heat pump can both heat AND cool your home. As it draws the hot air out of your home in the summer and cycles it back the the outdoors.
